Become a “ShelterBox Hero” by Helping Displaced Families in Nepal
On the morning of August 26, a glacial collapse on the Nepal-Tibet border of the Himalayas triggered a chain reaction of mass flooding, decimating villages for more than 40 miles along the Trishuli River. Nearly 1500 persons have died. More than 6000 are still missing.
It has been estimated that more than 80,000 people have been displaced, almost half of them children. These displaced families are in desperate need of shelter.

It is no small coincidence that it has been through Rotary connections that I have been privileged to learn and work with respected friends in Nepal. It was also Rotary that introduced me to the ShelterBox organization during a District Conference.
Rotary International became the first Project Partner of ShelterBoxUSA in 2012, and ShelterBox remains Rotary’s only disaster relief partner. I spoke with Matthew Saxton, ShelterBox VP of Development, to learn they are mobilizing the delivery of emergency shelter and supplies in response to the Nepal disasters. I have also been in contact with Nepali friends who support and will facilitate ShelterBox deliveries to families in need.
One ShelterBox kit will provide shelter and supplies for up to five people. Donations of $1000 will support one kit. As ‘People of Action’ dedicating our time, talents, and resources to ‘Create Lasting Impact’, I am appealing to Rotarian friends throughout District 5650 to join hearts and hands to support relief efforts for those impacted by this disaster. To learn what ShelterBox is doing in Nepal: Nepal Flash Floods Appeal – ShelterBox. You can watch a video, read more updates, and most importantly, donate any amount – every little bit helps! When you donate, indicate your Rotary or Rotaract Club and District 5650. These donations will be counted toward club and district giving. If we raise at least $1000, we will receive a digital award and be listed on their website at the end of the Rotary year!
Thank you for your friendship and dedication to “Service Above Self” to “Create Lasting Impact”! Here’s to the Heroes of Rotary District 5650!
